Every emergency visit starts with an exam so you understand exactly what's going on, with any cost confirmed in writing before treatment begins. A few simple steps can help before you reach us. For a toothache, rinse with warm water and gently floss to clear anything caught between teeth — avoid placing aspirin or any painkiller directly against the gum, since that can burn the tissue. If your face is swollen, a cold compress on the outside of your cheek helps more than heat, which can make swelling worse. For a knocked-out tooth, keep it moist in milk or saliva, avoid touching the root, and get to us as quickly as you can — timing matters for whether it can be saved. For a chipped or broken tooth, save any pieces if you can and rinse your mouth gently with warm water. If you've lost a filling or crown, keep the piece if possible and avoid chewing on that side until we see you. For a broken denture, please don't try to repair it yourself with glue — bring the pieces in and we'll take it from there.
Most dental emergencies are safely treated right here in our office, but a few situations call for an emergency room instead. Go to the ER or call 911 if you have facial swelling along with a fever, any trouble breathing or swallowing, or significant trauma to the jaw from a fall or impact. Those symptoms can point to an infection that's spread beyond the tooth or a possible fracture, and both need care beyond what a dental office can safely provide.
