Signs you may need a root canal

A root canal treats the inside of a tooth, the soft tissue called the pulp, when it becomes badly inflamed or infected. Many tooth problems feel alike, so no symptom on its own means you need one. Only an exam and an X-ray can tell. Signs worth having checked:

• Lingering pain, especially a deep ache or throbbing that comes and goes
• Sensitivity to hot or cold that stays long after the hot or cold is gone
• Pain when you bite down or press on a tooth
• A tooth that has darkened compared with the teeth around it
• Swelling or tenderness in the gum near a tooth, or a small bump on the gum
• A deep cavity, a crack, or a past injury to the tooth

Why the exam and X-ray come first

Some of these signs turn out to be a cavity, a cracked tooth, gum trouble or a bite issue instead. We never assume. Dr. Rana examines the tooth and takes digital X-rays of the root and surrounding bone. If a root canal is the answer, we show you the images and explain why.

What happens during a root canal, step by step

In general terms, a visit looks like this:

Depending on the tooth and how many roots it has, treatment may take one visit or more. We will tell you what to expect before we start.

• Numbing. We numb the area with local anesthetic so you stay comfortable.
• Access. A small opening is made in the top of the tooth to reach the inside.
• Cleaning. The inflamed or infected tissue is removed and the inside of the root canals is cleaned and shaped.
• Sealing. The cleaned space is filled and sealed so bacteria cannot get back in.
• Protecting the tooth. The opening is closed with a temporary or permanent filling, and we plan the next step to restore the tooth.

Staying comfortable

Root canal treatment is done under local anesthesia, and we check that you are numb before we begin. If you feel anything during treatment, tell us and we will pause and adjust. For anxious patients, oral sedation is available.

Some soreness afterward is common, and we will give you clear instructions for the days that follow.

Why save the tooth instead of pulling it?

Your natural tooth helps you chew, keeps neighboring teeth from drifting and supports the bone around it. When it can be treated and restored, keeping it is often a sensible choice.

That said, not every tooth can be saved. If a tooth is too damaged or a root is cracked, extraction may be the better path. In that case we will talk through replacement options, including a dental implant, so you can decide with the full picture in front of you.

Why a crown usually follows

After a root canal, the tooth is often more fragile than it was, particularly a back tooth that handles heavy chewing. Because of that, dentists commonly recommend covering it with a dental crown to protect it from cracking. Whether a crown is right depends on how much natural tooth remains and where it sits. Dr. Rana explains this before treatment, so the full plan is clear from the start.

Recovery: what to expect

Most people go back to normal routines quickly, but everyone heals a little differently. In general terms, the tooth and gum can feel tender for a few days, and it is wise to be gentle with that side of your mouth until the tooth is fully restored. We give you specific aftercare instructions. If pain worsens, swelling develops or something feels off, call us, and keep your follow-up visit so the tooth gets its final restoration.

When we refer you to an endodontist

Dr. Rana is a general dentist, not an endodontist. He performs root canal treatment, and he will also tell you honestly when a tooth is better handled by a specialist. Complex cases, such as unusual root shapes or teeth with previous root canal treatment, may be referred to an endodontist. If that happens, we explain why and coordinate next steps.
